A touch of colour

There are few things in life these days that women are more passionate about than their nails. Yes, there’s the gay hairdresser who entertains them with the latest celebrity gossip, the hours devoted to make-up, stiletto shoes, designer handbags, and jewelry, but one of the true expressions of their femininity is at their fingertips, literally. The humble nail has come a long way from when the Chinese, some 3000 years ago, applied the first enamel paints, waiting several hours for a pink finish. The Indians played around with the dye from the Henna plant, (think modern day Henna tattoos). The Egyptians were another civilization that used nail art early on. The color of the nails identifying your status in society. The higher class wore deep shades of red, and the lower a paler shade. Another mother of nail art, was the Inca civilization, who actually painted images of eagles on their fingertips. Fast forward to the 21st Century and the myriad ways in which the adorned nail is manicured to reflect a woman’s femininity, trends, fads, and fringe aspects, and one can see how it expresses the individuals passion and style in today’s world. Round, pointy, square, oval, gel, acrylic, French tip, fake, fantasy nails, or ones from a vending machine, and let’s not get started on the finishes, cream, jelly, shimmer, frost, chrome, glass fleck, opalescent, luster, pearlescent, foil, metallic, glitter and on and on. There are quick drying, long lasting, all-in-one, hardeners, and one coat. Certainly one of life’s great mysteries if you are a mere male. The modern day manicure has been around for the last century, and the contemporary manicurist needs to be a maestro to cater for a variety of personalities and their intimate desires. No easy task in the hustle and bustle of life.
